River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries. The Mekong delta region encompasses a large portion of southwestern Vietnam of 39,000 square kilometres (15,000 sq mi). The size of the area covered by water depends on the season. (wikipedia).
Mekong Delta has 11 provinces widely spread from Long An to Ca Mau, so it’s not so small; actually it’s pretty big and time consuming if you want to travel all the 11 provinces of the Mekong Delta. In this article, we try to help you how to travel the Mekong Delta efficiently and save money for your mekong delta trip, as well as how to book a car based on your routes.
1/ Google maps:
If you want to travel Mekong Delta or Vietnam efficiently, the first thing I suggest is that you should take a look and do some research on google maps. Knowing where you are going to save you a lot of time and money. For instance, if you want to visit Phu Quoc island, you should check it on google maps to see how it’s, where it is, and how to get there. Once you know the place, you can plan your trip easily. It’s better to have some ideas in mind than nothing.
Moving from one province to another province sometimes can be short or long or sometimes can be time consuming. If you like to visit two provinces which sit next to each other, It takes about 100km, so if you want to visit Can Tho from Vinh Long, you just need about 30 minutes ride. Now you can see how google maps save you much money as I mention above. If your have an itinerary like this:
Sai Gon – Can Tho – Tra Vinh – Rach Gia.
How would you put it in order to travel mekong efficiently? You see, the itinerary above is definitely wrong. If you do that route, It costs you hundred of dollars on car rental. So you may be confusing how it can be wrong. I explain it now. From Sai Gon you will get to Long An, Tien Giang and It’s pretty close to Tra Vinh, so if you see it on goolge maps, you know where should you go first. From Tra Vinh, you can get to Can Tho easily. so It must be like this:
Sai Gon -> Tra Vinh -> Can Tho -> Rach Gia
Knowing the distances between one place to another not only saves your time, but also saves you a lot of money.
3/ Ask the experts:
If you don’t have any idea and don’t know how to work with google maps, don’t worry. Just try to ask the experts. It’s costs you nothing, but you have more than one thing. A travel agent in Mekong Delta know where and when you should go. Just tell them what you want to see, they will help you plan your trip efficiently.
4/ Learn some vietnamese phrases:
If you are going to join an organized tour to explore the Mekong Delta, you don’t need to do so. If you are budget travelers and want to travel by your own, you can do some research and learn how to bargain. It helps you save money not being overcharged in some cases. In some parts of the Mekong Delta, It’s not easy to find an english speaking person. So if you know some vietnamese, you can also ask for directions.
